Shahid Khandker's Exclusive
Shahid Khandker is the President of KNS Canada Inc, a healthcare-focused organization shaped by a clear belief: innovation in medical technology should directly support healthcare professionals and promote healthier living. Driven by the idea that healthcare innovation must deliver real value, the company has grown steadily over time. What began as a dream has taken shape into a focused vision, informed by challenges, learning, and persistence.
The story of KNS Canada Inc is closely tied to Shahid Khandker’s own journey. Arriving in Canada in 2001 as a first-generation immigrant, he carried with him not just ambition, but a deep interest in healthcare innovation. In 2004, KNS took a bold and ambitious step: introducing a liver dialysis machine, the first of its kind in the world. It was a highly advanced and much-needed innovation, designed to support patients suffering from end-stage liver disease. Despite its strong clinical potential, the project ultimately failed to survive. The manufacturing startup behind the technology went bankrupt, and the effort came to an abrupt end.
For many entrepreneurs, such an early failure could have marked the end of the road. For Khandker, it became a defining moment. Rather than choosing a safe or conventional “me-too” business approach simply to survive, he decided to look forward. The experience had already created early connections with liver specialists and physicians, and it revealed a clear gap in the market. Liver care was a niche area with limited innovative solutions. This realization became the foundation for KNS’s long-term direction.
Instead of moving away from the challenge, the organization chose to go deeper. KNS gradually focused on liver care, with the goal of building a complete platform that could support diagnosis, management, and long-term care through innovative products. Over time, the company successfully introduced several non-invasive liver diagnostic solutions, helping clinicians assess liver health more effectively and safely. Each step was careful and deliberate, with a strong focus on building a stable base before expanding further.
What sets KNS Canada Inc apart in the medical technology space is its commitment to specialization. The company does not aim to serve everyone. Instead, it works closely with specific medical specialties and niche segments, offering targeted solutions rather than broad, generic products. This focus has allowed KNS to build deep relationships with healthcare professionals who value expertise, reliability, and practical innovation. Customer needs remain central to every decision, and products are developed with real clinical challenges in mind.
Internally, the organization operates with a strong sense of shared purpose. Khandker has consistently emphasized building a family-like environment within the company. Every team member, regardless of role, is treated with respect and trust. This culture encourages ownership and accountability, as employees see themselves not as numbers, but as valued contributors to a larger mission. Such an approach, inspired by organizational cultures seen in countries like Japan and Germany, has helped KNS maintain stability even while operating in a demanding and fast-changing industry.
Leadership at KNS is guided by clear values practiced daily rather than displayed as slogans. Proactive thinking is preferred over reactive decision-making. Integrity is considered non-negotiable. Delegation and teamwork are encouraged, allowing individuals to grow while strengthening the organization as a whole. Adaptability plays a key role, especially in healthcare, where technology, regulations, and clinical needs evolve constantly. Above all, decisions are often shaped by a simple question: how can this make a real difference?
For Khandker, scalability is not about fast expansion alone. In his experience, true growth begins with building a strong and reliable core. The priority is always to develop a solid platform based on the company’s core competence. Only once that foundation is in place does it make sense to explore the next step. This philosophy has allowed KNS to grow steadily without losing focus or compromising quality.
Innovation at KNS follows a similar approach. Rather than chasing trends, the company concentrates on strengthening what it does best and then looking for solutions that naturally complement that expertise. Technology plays a central role in this process. As a specialty-driven medical technology organization, KNS relies on continuous innovation not just to grow, but to survive. Even products that perform well today require constant improvement in performance, application, or usability. Without that effort, relevance can be lost quickly in a competitive healthcare landscape.
The company’s approach to sustainable growth is best illustrated through its experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many sensitive medical devices cannot be cleaned with alcohol-based disinfectants, as these can damage equipment and void warranties. During the pandemic, sourcing alcohol-free disinfectant solutions became a serious challenge for one of KNS’s flagship products. In response, the company decided to develop its own alcohol-free disinfectant wipes.
Rather than stopping there, KNS took the idea further. With environmental responsibility in mind, the company developed biodegradable, alcohol-free disinfectant wipes. While this product addressed an urgent need during COVID, it was not sustainable as a single offering in the long term. To support continued growth, the company expanded the range to include other specialty cleaning wipes. This expansion naturally led to the creation of H&H Health and Hygiene, a wholly owned subsidiary focused on hygiene and wellness products.
Building on this momentum, KNS is now preparing to launch a range of medical supplements in 2026 through H&H Health and Hygiene. These supplements are designed to support the function of specific organs and promote healthy living. They are unique in their positioning, being Kosher, Halal, and Vegan certified, allowing them to reach diverse global markets. With this new portfolio, KNS is strengthening its presence beyond medical devices and moving toward a more holistic healthcare offering.
International expansion has also become part of the company’s growth journey. Having established its base in Canada, KNS has extended its business overseas and aims to reach global markets with its medical supplements and healthcare solutions. This expansion is guided by a strong respect for cultural differences and local needs. Khandker believes that becoming a global player requires understanding each market deeply rather than imposing one’s own cultural mindset.
When asked about advice for entrepreneurs building globally relevant companies from Canada, Khandker prefers humility. Rather than offering direct advice, he shares lessons from experience. He believes that profit should not be the primary motivation. When a product or service brings real, tangible value to people’s lives, financial success tends to follow. He also emphasizes the importance of working in areas one truly understands, rather than blindly following external advice or market trends.
On a personal level, continuous learning is a big part of Khandker’s leadership style. He believes there is more to learn from failure than from success, whether it is his own experience or that of others. Understanding what went wrong helps him make better decisions and stay balanced during both good times and difficult ones.
Looking toward the future, Khandker views leadership as something that must constantly evolve. History offers many examples of once-iconic companies that lost relevance due to complacency or poor market awareness. He points to brands like Blackberry and Motorola as reminders that strong products alone are not enough. Leaders must invest in innovation, maintain sharp market intelligence, and stay alert to both internal weaknesses and external disruptions. His own experience with the liver dialysis project reinforces this belief, showing how even highly innovative solutions can fail due to regulatory delays, financial strain, or external pressures.
When reflecting on common misconceptions about running a company at this scale, Khandker believes many underestimate the emotional and personal investment required. Building and sustaining an organization is not just about strategy and numbers; it involves resilience, patience, and a willingness to face uncertainty repeatedly.
If given the chance to revisit the early days of his career, Khandker says he would not change much. He describes himself as a dreamer, driven not by wealth or status, but by the desire to bring meaningful technologies, products, and services to people. Satisfaction, for him, has always mattered more than conventional definitions of success. That mindset continues to shape KNS Canada Inc today, a company built not just to grow, but to make a difference.
